A Way with Words

A Way with Words is an innovative leadership development program which offers students the opportunity to develop effective presentation and interview skills and practice their public speaking. Anyone seeking to develop their leadership skills must have an understanding and ability to effectively communicate. The ability to communicate enables a leader to inspire and motivate their members towards a common goal. Leaders must be able to inspire a shared vision for the future to be effective in their roles; this is not possible without a solid grasp of the fundamentals of public speaking.

Next Session: Explore & Express

Ever wonder how to approach that friend that keeps posting the offensive articles on their Facebook page? Should you join the comment war? Should you approach them after class? Maybe it’s better not to say anything… but it’s SO offensive and they are SUCH a nice person. Or at least you thought they were? In a society where free speech is valued, a meaningful dissent is vital to furthering the discussion. But so many things can get in the way: reputation, pride, vulnerability, ego, emotions.

The Center for Leadership and Involvement is excited to announce the launch of the Spring 2016 edition of A Way with Words: Explore and Express” This engaging and interactive program is open to all students in the University.

This two-night seminar focuses on transforming conflict into an opportunity. The first interactive session will focus on skill-building on how to explore positions and conflicts, from their causes to their underlying motivations, to your own needs and limitations within the conflict. The second session will focus on expressing your viewpoints in the face of difficult conversations, from properly framing the dialogue, to handling emotionally charged conversation, and finally to collaborating and action planning on how to move forward.

Students may register for the two-day seminar intensive held on Tuesday, May 3 and Wednesday, May 4 from 6:00p-8:00p (dinner will be provided at 5:45p). Both sessions will be held in the McCormick Tribune Lounge – 1st floor of the Reynolds Club.
